Facebook and Skype close to deal that would bring both web giants together
Last updated at 10:04 PM on 30th September 2010
A Skype and Facebook tie-up would represent a powerful force as the giants of the technology industry vie for supremacy in the virtual world.
The alliance would heap pressure on Google, which is desperate to regain some of the lustre it has lost as a result of Facebook's rise and rise.
The most recent attempt to derail Facebook saw Google add voice calls to its Gmail services.
Skype, whose software allows users to call each other for free over the internet, currently boasts some 560m members.
It also has a paid-for service which enables users to ring landlines abroad more cheaply than through traditional landline providers.
